RGF -The French Geological Reference Platform: Status and Perspectives

The French Geological Reference Platform (RGF), designed by BRGM, is a national programme for acquisition and management of geological data. Launched in the early 2010's, the RGF involves the geosciences community including universities, CNRS, institutes and companies. The new 3-D knowledge on subsoils developed by the RGF intends to support innovative responses to a wide range of scientific first order questions as well as issues facing our society, e.g. surface and subsurface planning, water and mineral resources management, energy prospection and storage, and risk mitigation. Complementing the 1:50 000 scale geological maps and the subsoils databank, RGF data are gathered into a collaborative information system designed to exchange and build on geoscientific knowledge among professionals in research and education, economic sectors, as well as among civil society organisations and public. The RGF is a multi-annual programme deployed across French regional work programmes. The methodology of RGF was set up during the Vosges-Rhine Graben demonstrator presented in 2013. Then, the Pyrénées have been investigated until nowadays, leading to a new 4-D design of the infrastructure of the mountain range. In 2018, two new work programmes were launched. The first work programme covers the Paris Basin and focuses on a densely populated area and economic activity with major resource and urban-use challenges. The second programme, over the Alps and surrounding basins, aims at a better understanding of the 3-D structure of an emblematic mountain range and at addressing the impact of climate change and geological risk.
