Hydrogeochemical investigation of gold in surface waters by the use of integrative and passive samplers: proof of concept

Résumé

The use of hydrogeochemistry has been successful for characterization of many types of ore deposits. The application for gold exploration has been relatively little investigated to date, one of the major remaining limitation being the analysis of the very low levels of Au in surface waters (<0.001 to 0.005 ppb). However, it has been shown that the presence of gold in surface waters can directly reveal the existence of gold mineralization. In addition, passive and integrative sampling techniques are recognized as powerful solutions for measurement of dissolved metals at very low levels as this type of device can accumulate the analyte in the sampler continuously during the exposure period. Among these methods, Diffusive Gradient in Thin Films (DGTs) have recently been used to detect gold concentrations in groundwater and surface water, notably using activated carbon as a binding agent. To date, this technology, which is based on DGTs and activated carbon as gold preconcentration phase in solution, is very promising, but this method must be validated by a dual laboratory and field approach in order to determine the optimal conditions of use. This validation or "Proof of Concept" is the subject of this work and we will discuss both laboratory tests and preliminary field data at the time of the conference.
