Contribution of Image correlation SEM-EDS-Raman to the study of geomaterials: a promising approach

In geosciences, the combination of elemental and cristallographic analysis is frequently required to identify and describe a mineral. Mineralogical analysis requires a set of analytical imaging techniques to access a thorough knowledge of the sample, to better understand the mineralogical, chemical and textural factors that control their behavior, their reactivity... Among these techniques, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy occupy a major place among the characterization techniques. SEM is a microscopy technique, providing various informations on morphology, topography, chemistry at a nanometric scale, supplemented by elemental microanalysis (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy EDS, wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy WDS), crystallographic analysis (electron backscattered diffraction EBSD), or cathodoluminescence (CL). Micro Raman spectroscopy is also widely used in geosciences. The spectrum is unique for a given compound and sensitive to various elements of the local environment. It can reveal the crystal structure of a mineral, provides details on the chemical and structural properties (functional groups, lattice defects, crystallinity, etc.). Raman offers various information which include, among others, identification of polymorphs, crystallographic orientation, evaluation of temperature and stress effects on the structure.Moreover, micro-Raman spectroscopy provides complementary chemical and structural information to that obtained from SEM. This is why both are often used in parallel. Couling SEM-EDS and confocal Raman imaging on the same analytical system 1 is a new and efficient method for identification of the mineral nature and the determination of structural properties of geomaterials. This "multitechniques" microscopy allows the obtention of a real mineralogical mapping of rocks. Moreover, confocal Raman spatial resolution makes it possible to obtain mineralogical information on submicrometric particles that cannot be properly analyzed by EDS. The application to geomaterials and mineralogy will be illustrated by various examples 2,3 , including naturally occuring asbestos, for which this coupling makes it possible to solve problems for the diagnosis and the mineralogical characterization.
