Roles of Gas Hydrates for CO 2 Geological Storage Purposes

Abstract : This chapter describes the potential role of CO2 hydrates in standard geological storages to inhibit the CO2 migration in the overburden. It examines experiments available in the literature with CO2‐rich fluids with some impurities. There are some specific geological situations where gas hydrates may play an important role in trapping CO2. The chapter discusses the principle of gas swapping/exchange between CO2 and CH4 as an alternative production method of methane from natural gas hydrates. It presents the “deep offshore” storage option and the method for inferring the main phase (either liquid or solid) in which the CO2 is stored. For illustration purpose, this latter method is applied in the area of the Biscay Bay and Galicia Plateau to estimate the storage capacity in the French and Spanish exclusive economic zones (EEZs).
