Implementation of an INSPIRE registry in France : state of progress

BRGM (the French geological survey) is France's reference public institution for Earth Science applications. BRGM works on managing and delivering geosciences data to be used as support to decision-making for spatial planning, mineral prospecting, groundwater protection, pollution control, natural risk prevention and the characterization of local areas. BRGM is managing the French Géocatalogue (www.geocatalogue.fr) which collects information (metadata) and provides tools for harvesting, searching and consulting geographical information. It also provides a discovery service (CSW) which is harvested by the INSPIRE geoportal. In accordance with INSPIRE implementing rules, a national registry is implemented in the Géocatalogue infrastructure (http://registre.geocatalogue.fr), based on the Re3gistry software. This registry references codelists for data produced by French public authorities, in a distributed architecture based on thematic registers/registries (e.g. BRGM registry). It is also synchronized with the INSPIRE register federation (http://inspire-regadmin.jrc.ec.europa.eu/ror/). The presentation aims to show the technical and organizational issues in implementing a national registry and explain how it can help organizations manage and use reference codes, especially in the context of INSPIRE.
