Access through ECCSEL ERIC to a world-class research infrastructure in Europe for developing CCS technologies

Résumé

ECCSEL, the European Research Infrastructure on Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS), was initiated in 2010 thanks to the support of the European Commission and was transformed in 2017 into a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), a legal entity with statutory seat in Trondheim, Norway. The mission of ECCSEL is opening access for researchers to a high quality European Research Infrastructure (RI) devoted to the development of next generation CCS technologies in an efficient and structured way, to help enable low to zero CO2 emissions from industry and power generation to combat global climate change. ECCSEL ERIC operates a distributed, integrated European RI based on a selection of the best research facilities in Europe for CO2 capture, storage and transport research. Possible extension to some CO2 use is also being investigated (from CCS to CCUS). The founding members of ECCSEL ERIC are five countries across Europe: Norway, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. The Operations Centre of ECCSEL is based in Trondheim, Norway, and is financed by the member countries. National nodes, acting as national coordination bodies between owners of the facilities and with the ministries are led by NTNU for the Norwegian node, BRGM for the French node, OGS for the Italian node, TNO for the Dutch node, and BGS for the UK node. Fifty-four state-of-the-art research facilities are currently available for access by the global CCS community. These facilities are provided by the following institutes: NTNU, SINTEF, SINTEF Energy (Norway); Andra, BRGM, EDF, INERIS, IFPEN (France); OGS, SOTACARBO (Italy); TNO (The Netherlands); BGS, UKCCS RC-PACT (United Kingdom). A number of facilities are planned to be upgraded in the future, and new facilities such as a semi-industrial CO2 transport loop by TOTAL (France) are to be constructed. The expansion of ECCSEL membership into new countries and additional facilities is also envisaged.
