OneGeology – 2008-2018 ONE SUCCESFUL DECADE OF GEOLOGICAL DATA SHARING

Abstract : Eighty one participants from forty three nations and fifty three national and international bodies met in Brighton, UK, between 12 and 16 March 2007 to discuss and agree how to improve the accessibility of global, regional and national geological map data and, in doing so, increase its usefulness to society. Participants at the workshop asserted that geological map data are essential to advancing science and education in order to better provide solutions to the challenges of mitigating environmental hazards, ensuring the sustainable supply of energy, minerals and water, and addressing the urgent challenge of our changing climate.” These are the first lines of the Brighton accord, initiated by Ian Jackson and some other colleagues for geological surveys. The OneGeology portal was successfully launched at the IGC 2008 in Helsinki with an impressive mass media interest. Ten years after, the initiative has reached a new regime. It is now managed by the OneGeology Consortium, and operated by BGS and BRGM. 119 countries are contributing to the largest initiative of geological surveys. OneGeology is now exploring new horizons and ambitions to reproduce what has been achieved for 2D maps for geology in 3D, to support its mission of “providing geoscience data globally”. The presentation will review how the model of OneGeology based on interoperability (both technical and organizational), with a clear mission and advanced technology has achieved a number of goals : improve visibility of geological maps and of geological surveys, enhance technical capacity of participants, stimulate the contribution of geologists to Open Science.
