Realistic exposure scenarios for post-registration studies on plant protection products in aquatic mesocosms

Résumé

A method was developed to calculate realistic multi-exposure scenarios for post-registration studies on plant protection products (PPP) in aquatic ecosystems. The method, based on two crop management, could help for building of crop management systems based on impact on aquatic communities and not only on PPP transferred mass. In a pea/wheat/oilseed rape culture rotation, the wheat and oilseed rape crop management systems were acquired from existing farms of northern France. Two management systems were studied. The first one called "Classical" represent common crop managements in the studied areas. The second system, called "Low Pesticide Input" was built to lower the amount of pesticides which could be transferred. Fluxes of active ingredient (a.i.) to a theoretical water body were simulated for spray drift, runoff, and drainage according to realistic seasonal variations over 3 years. The preferential flow model, MACRO, was used to simulate the transfer in drainage water. PRZM was used to simulate the transfer by runoff water. Ganzelmeier curves were used to simulate spray drift transfer to a water body with a 5 meter no spray buffer zone. A 100  100 m (1 hectare) square plot adjacent to a 1 m wide ditch was studied. It was supposed that the depth of the ditch was 0.3 m for a volume of 30,000 L. Daily solute fluxes of the three processes were summed and divided by the sum of the daily water fluxes from drainage and from runoff plus the ditch volume. The simulated concentrations were found to be in accordance with experimental data. The a.i. fluxes were converted into concentrations to be introduced into 16 experimental pond mesocosms. Fate and ecotoxicological effects of the mixture of PPP are going to be followed for 21 months in these mesocosms.
