Raman spectroscopy of adsorbed water in clays: first attempt of band assignment

Abstract

The following assignment is proposed for the OH region of SAz-2. The two large band at 3260 and 3475 cm-1 are assigned to water in pores, 3620 cm-1 to water molecules around the interlayer cations and 3650cm-1 to hydroxyl group within the clay layer. The band at 3600 cm-1 is therefore more likely to be connected to adsorbed water on the clay surface. It was also shown that Raman spectroscopy could be a useful tool to determine water content inside clays or even inside highly saturated solution.
