Thermo2Pro: A tool for geothermal exploration in basin context

Résumé

In France, and in many other countries, accessing data for geothermal exploration can be a hard task. This is particularly the case for information coming from research projects. Thermo2Pro is a tool designed to fill the gap between the data and the people needing to use them, especially the professionals from the geothermal sector. They include contracting authorities, local authorities, and design offices. The main goal is to help them by giving relevant material to prepare a pre-feasibility study. A secondary objective is to promote geothermal development by facilitating the access to information. Thermo2Pro is a Web application giving the user access to the information through 2D vertical or horizontal section, or 1D borehole. This is achieved using an interactive cartographic interface where the user defines requests. Data are stored as 3D grids in order to be independent from the tools generating them. These grids are stored in a VTK format (Visualization Tool Kit); requests to the grids are performed via WPS Web services (Web Processing Service, OGC - Open Geospatial Consortium). The development of Thermo2Pro is on-going with the participation of a users committee to define and test the application. The tool will be demonstrated through data related to the Trias aquifer in the Paris basin. The available information will mainly be a model of the geometry of the aquifer, an estimation of porosity, and a model of the temperatures in the area.
